ಬೆನೆಗಲ್ ನರಸಿ೦ಗ ರಾವ್  ಈ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದವರು ಬಹಳ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಂದಿ. ದೇಶದ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಟ ಸಂವಿಧಾನದ ರಚನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಪಾತ್ರ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು.ಭಾರತದ ಸ೦ವಿಧಾನ ಅ೦ದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ನಮ್ಮಮುಂದೆ ಬರುವ ಹೆಸರು ಡಾ. ಬಿ.ಅರ್.ಅ೦ಬೇಡ್ಕರ್.  ಆದರೆ ವಾಸ್ತವದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ೦ವಿಧಾನದ ಮೂಲ ಕರಡು ಸಿದ್ಧ ಪಡಿಸಿದವರು ಬಿ.ಎನ್.ರಾವ್ ರಂತಹ  ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ ಎ೦ಬುದು ಬಹುಮ೦ದಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವಿಭಅಜ್ಯ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಉಡುಪಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ  ಕು೦ದಾಪುರ ಸಮೀಪದ ಬೆನೆಗಲ್ ಎ೦ಬ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 26, 1887 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ  ಇವರು ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಾಧನೆ, ಏರಿದ ಎತ್ತರ ಎಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ್ದು  . ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕೆನರಾ ವಿದ್ಯಾಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಫ್ರೌಡ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಿದ ಬೆನಗಲ್ ಅವರು ಅಂದಿನ ಮದ್ರಸ್ ಪ್ರೆಸಿಡೆನ್ಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಟೋಪ್ಪರ್ ಸ್ಟೂಡೆಂಟ್ ಆಗಿ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿದ್ದರು.  ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ಎಲೆಮರೆಯ ಕಾಯ೦ತೆ ಜನಮಾನಸಕ್ಕೆ ಅಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದದ್ದು  ಮಾತ್ರ ವಿಪರ್ಯಾಸ.  ಅವರು ದೇಶ ಕ೦ಡ  ಮಹಾನ್ ನ್ಯಾಯವೇತ್ತರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು. 1909 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಇ೦ಡಿಯನ್ ಸಿವಿಲ್ ಸರ್ವಿಸ್ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಪಾಸ್ ಮಾಡಿದ ರಾಯರಿಗೆ ನ್ಯಾಯಾ೦ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಒಲವಿತ್ತು.  ಹಲವಾರು ಉನ್ನತ ಹುದ್ದೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಿದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಶ್ ಸರಕಾರ ನೈಟ್ನೀ ಹುಡ್ಡಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ನೀಡಿ  ಗೌರವಿಸಿತ್ತು. 1939 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆ...

ರಮಾಬಾಯಿ ಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಥಮ ಎಜ್ಯುಕೆಷನಿಸ್ಟ್ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ ಈಗ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿರುವ "kindergarden" ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಸಚಿತ್ರ ಪಠ್ಯಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಭಾರತದ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದವರು.  ಈಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಇ೦ದಿನ ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ, ಅವರ ಹೆಸರು ಜನಮಾನಸದಿ೦ದ ದೂರವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ರಮಾ ಬಾಯಿ  ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದು 1858 ರಲ್ಲಿ. ಅವಿಭಾಜ್ಯ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಕಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಒ೦ದು ಕುಗ್ರಾಮ "ಮಾಳ"ಎ೦ಬ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ. ತ೦ದೆ ಅನ೦ತ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿ ಡೋ೦ಗ್ರೆ. ಸ೦ಸ್ಕ್ರತ ದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ವಿದ್ವತ್ತು ಹೊ೦ದಿದ್ದ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಿ೦ದ ಈಕೆಯೂ ಅದ್ವಿತೀಯವೆನಿಸುವ ಭಾಷಾಪಾ೦ಡಿತ್ಯ ಹೊ೦ದಿದ್ದರು.  ಎಳವೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ರಾಮಾಯಣ, ಮಹಾ ಭಾರತ, ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕ೦ಠಪಾಠ ಮಾಡಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದ ಈಕೆ ಅವುಗಳ ಅರ್ಥವಿಸ್ತಾರವನ್ನು ಜನರಿಗೆ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಹೇಳುವ ಕಲೆ ಸಿಧ್ಧಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದರು. ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಉ೦ಟಾದ ಭಯ೦ಕರ ಕ್ಷಾಮದ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಊರಿಗೆ ಊರೇ ಹಸಿವಿನಿ೦ದ ನರಳಿ ಸಾವಿನ ದವಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ತ೦ದೆ-ತಾಯಿ ಮರಣಿಸಿದರು. ಜೀವನೋಪಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ದಾರಿಕಾಣದೇ ರಮಾಬಾಯಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಸೋದರನೊ೦ದಿಗೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಿ೦ದ ಗುಳೇ ಹೊರಟರು. ಆಗ ಈಕೆಯ ವಯಸ್ಸು 16. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಾದ್ಯ೦ತ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ದೇಶದ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಲ್ನಡಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ೦ಚರಿಸಿ ಉದ್ಗ...

ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ 1930ರ ಎ. 13ರಂದು ಮುಂಜಾನೆ ಉಪ್ಪು ತಯಾರಿಸಲು ಸಿದ್ಧರಾದ ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹಿಗಳ ಗುಂಪು ಬಂದರು ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಟಿತು. ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹಿಗಳು ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ಪಿ. ಎಲ್‌. ಪುಣಿಚಿತ್ತಾಯರು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದ ಗೀತೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು: ಉಪ್ಪಿನ ಕದನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋರಾಡುವ ಜನರೆ ಉಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಡಿ ಭಟರೆ ಉಪ್ಪಿಗೂ ಗತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಎಂದರೆ ಏನರ್ಥ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನ ಗಳಿಸಲು ಆಗದ ಬಾಳು ವ್ಯರ್ಥ ಈ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆಯು ಬಂದರು ಸೇರುವಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಜನರು ಬಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಉಪ್ಪು ನೀರನ್ನು ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಂದು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್‌ ಕಚೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ನೀರನ್ನು ಉಪ್ಪು ತಯಾರಿಸಿದರು. ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ಪೊಲೀಸ್‌ ತಂಡದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸರ್ಕಲ್‌ ಇನ್ಸ್‌ಪೆಕ್ಟರ್‌ ಬಂದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ ಉಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿದ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿ ಉಳಿದ ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಒಯ್ದರು. ಅಂದು ಸಂಜೆ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಮೈದಾನಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆರ್‌. ಕೆ. ಪ್ರಭು ಅವರ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಭೆ ಸೇರಿತು. ಉಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಏಲಂ ಮಾಡಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಆಗ ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಬಂದು ಉಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಸೆಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರು. ಅಂದು ಆರಂಭವಾದ ಉಪ್ಪಿನ ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ವಿವಿಧೆಡೆ ಆ ತಿಂಗಳ ಕೊನೆಯ ತನಕ ಸಾಗಿತು. ಪಾನ ನಿಷೇಧಕ್ಕೆ ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಾದ್ಯಂತ ಶೇಂದಿ, ಶರಾಬು ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳ ಎದುರು 1930ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿಕೆಟಿಂಗ್‌ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಮೇ 5ನ್ನು ಮದ್ಯ ನಿಷೇಧ ದಿನವೆಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಆ ದಿನ ಮೆ...

ತುಳುನಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಗೆಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ಭವ್ಯ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಆಳಿದ್ದ ಆಳುಪ, ವಿಜಯನಗರ, ಕೆಳದಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಂದಲೂ, ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ರಾಜವಂಶೀಯರಿಂದಲೂ ಆರಾಧಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅನೇಕ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳ ವಿನಿಯೋಗಗಳು ಸಾಂಗವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಸದುದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ, ಅಂದಿನ ಅರಸರು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಟ್ಟ ದತ್ತಿ ಶಾಸನಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಅಪರಿಮಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ತುಂಡರಸರಲ್ಲಿ ಚೌಟರು ಸುಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರು.  ಇವರು ಮೂಲತಃ ಕರಾವಳಿಯ ಉಳ್ಳಾಲದವರಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಮುಂದೆ ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ, ಮೂಡಬಿದಿರೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನೇರ್ಪಡಿಸಿ ರಾಜ್ಯಭಾರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇವರು ಸೋಮನಾಥ ದೇವರ ಭಕ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಆದಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಇವರು ಆಳಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಸೋಮನಾಥ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿವೆ. ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ, ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ, ಅಮ್ಮೆಂಬಳ, ಪೆರ್ಮುದೆ, ಪೋರ್ಕೋಡಿ, ಗುರುಪುರ, ಇರಾ, ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಸೋಮನಾಥ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥವು ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗುಹಾತೀರ್ಥದ ಸನ್ನಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಅತಿಮಹಿಮಾನ್ವಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪೂರ್ವಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಜಾಬಾಲಿಮುನಿಯ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಶ್ರಮವಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದು ಪುರಾಣೋಕ್ತಿಯಿದೆ. ಶ್ರ್‍ಈಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅರಸರ ಮಂಚ, ಅರಸುಕಟ್ಟೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಚೌಟರಸರು ಆಗಾಗ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೂಕಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿರುವ ದಿ. ಗಣಪತಿರಾವ್ ಐ...

Even though Bunder has lost some of its bustle and sheen, Bombay Lucky Restaurant still remains as busy as it has been for nearly 80 years. Mohammed Iqbal, 32, who is the son of its owner Mohammad Sulaiman, says that in all these years, Bombay Lucky has retained its customers, who keep returning for some simple and tasty biryani. Mr. Iqbal says his father took over the restaurant 40 years ago, but the restaurant itself belonged to the pre-Independence era. The menu has changed little over the years, except that for the last few months the owners have been forced to stop serving fish because of “labour problems”. Over 10 years ago, Mr. Iqbal said, the walls of the restaurant had been decorated with glass paintings of flowers and buildings, but gradually the paintings got worn out, and had to be removed. Sadashiv salian was born on November 17 1950 to Padmanabha and Laxmi Salian, residents of Tenka Yermal, in Udupi.  He migrated to Mumbai at an early age, where he pursued initial studies and graduated from Chinmaya College, Andheri.  He was employed in Central Bank of India in Mumbai in 1989 and married Susheela.
